Question: In this digital world, will our predecessors in 100 years see us exactly as clear as today?
When you look at old photos or video footage from 100 years ago, its usually misty and grainy and its hard to relate to the people in the images as there often unreal and distant because of the quality, but in this digital age, what will happen in say 100 to 200 years or even 1000 years from now, will it just be like us looking back at cleopatra as a digital image, will they see us as real and crystal clear, but long gone by.
Answer: The quality is already pretty damn good, how much better does it need to be, sure in theory folk looking back at images made today have the potential to see clearer images than we have looking back at early photographs but this does raise a couple of issues:
Source Image Quality: Yes cameras today are better. Better lenses, better film emulsions with finer grain and the advent of high resolution digital cameras.
Availability of technology: Cameras are pretty cheap these days. 100 years ago it was the preserve of the professional or wealthy amateur.
Today there is a wider range of talent using the kit taking many more images of many more different things. There will be much greater choice in archives of the future, quality aside.Portability & technology: Cameras are now able to record high speed events in sharp focus with no blur, things like sports can be imaged these days in ways that just weren't possible 100 years ago.
Cameras are portable enough to go up mountains, into war zones, the latest digital models can capture images in light which was just beyond film.It's great that we can look at plate glass negatives, or examine 35mm slides from 50 years ago, or get reprints of 20 year old negatives, but in 100 years will JPEGs and TIFFS still work with the playback technology of the day? Will the hard-drives and cd-roms and DVDs that store the images still be servicable? Will the dye have faded? Will the images have corrupted? Will the hard-drive have seized?
Slides taken today maybe have the best chance of being viewable in 100 years as all you need to do is hold it up to the light.
It's an interesting question, which I'm not sure I've really answered, but I've enjoyed thinking about it.
